catWhat kind of cat is right for you? Read this article for some guidelines.
Owning a cat has been medically proven to be a stress-reducer and lowers blood pressure. Bringing a new cat home can be an exciting time, but do your homework to make sure you get one that is a good match for you.

No matter whether you're getting your pet from a breeder, pet store, or humane society, be aware of the following things to help avoid problems later on.

Adding a new pet to a family is always an exciting time. MEOW would like to help make this experience a pleasant and lifelong success.

So you're seriously thinking about getting your first cat, and you are sure you want a cat in your life. Splendid! You may cathave some preconceived notions that you want a particular breed of cat, or that you want a kitten instead of an adult kitty. But before that important decision, do some homework. Like life itself, there are many factors involved in choosing a cat, some of which you may never have considered. Here's the help you need in making that decision. On the other hand, you may find yourself lucky enough to be chosen by the cat of your future.

The look of the cat

Please do not chose a cat or kitten based on looks only. The cat may be beautiful in your eyes but the cat's personality and how it will fit into your life is far more important. Every cat has a different personality, just like humans, and that match is very important since you will be living with your cat for up to 15 or 20 years.

Male vs Female

Personality-wise, there really isn't a lot of difference between the sexes, if they are neutered. Whole male (unneutered) will fight for territory if outdoors, and indoors will liberally spray their strong scent on walls and curtains, to mark their territory. Whole females will also spray on occasion. Worse yet, they will make themselves and you miserable each time they go into season, with loud yowls and bizarre body gyrations.

catOn the other hand, once neutered, their personalities will improve, if anything. I've known male cats to be loving and loyal, and they are my usual preference. Other people swear by female cats as felicity purrsonified. Bottom line is that it doesn't make a lot of difference. You'll want to look for personality first, then if you find several nice kitties, narrow it down to sex, if that's important to you.

The type of household

Do you have a busy lifestyle or are you home often? Do you live alone or are there people home often? Do you have a quiet household or is it action packed?

A cat's personality helps determine if a cat will do better in a calm or rambunctious home. Shy cats prefer quiet homes while outgoing, confident cats prefer the action and newness of a home with activity.

Senior cats do well in quiet homes as they enjoy sleeping throughout the day, while younger cats enjoy the extended playtime available with an active household. MEOW knows the personalities of the cats in our care and can help match the right cat to the right home.

The age of the cat … kitten or cat?

Remember, young cats are active. Older cats are less active.

• How much activity can your lifestyle and household manage?
• Are you willing to kitten-proof your home?
• Are you willing to train a kitten in proper household "etiquette"?
• Are you willing to lose sleep at night? Kittens can be very nocturnal.
• Are you home enough to give a kitten the amount of attention it needs so that it does not become bored, destructive or depressed?
• Are you willing to have two kittens so they can keep each other company?

Even though kittens are irresistibly cute, would an adult cat be more suitable for you and your family? Adult and senior cats do have spurts of energy but are generally more low keyed overall. And never forget, kittens turn into cats.
The personality type of the cat

Consider the type of cat that you prefer and that would fit in best with you and your family. Do you want an independent catcats that has a dominant personality, or do you want a super affectionate, lap cat? If you want a cat that needs a lot of attention, do you have the time to spend with it? An unhappy cat can become depressed and display inappropriate behavior.
Shy cats - Do you have the time to work with a shy cat so that it feels comfortable and stable? Don't be afraid to adopt a shy cat. They often become extremely bonded with people given the time, patience and affection. Shy cats do better in homes with less noise and activity. They prefer routines, predictability and gentle affection. They do not remain shy with their immediate family. They just don't like to meet new people. More information on shy cats.

Outgoing cats - Do you have the time to spend with a social, outgoing cat? These cats demand action and attention and like new adventures. Playtime and being part of the household activity is important to a cat like this - they thrive on burning off their energy.

Rough around the edges - Would you prefer an independent cat to share your space with? Some cats who have survived a hard life may need to learn some manners and like to seek out solitude at times. These cats, with their bent ears and scars, are wonderful pets. They just may want to share life on their terms.
