Thick, shiny, dark green leaves arise from central base of the plant. Showy single and double flowers arranged in loose clusters that rise above the foliage.

 

FLOWER COLORS:

 

Salmon, White, Pink, Red

 

AFTER FLOWERING:

 

Plant will continue to flower with adequate light. Cut plant back as needed. Water regularly and fertilize every 2-4 weeks.

Small container, small planter (hanging basket).

 

LIGHT:

 

Medium. East or west window, about one thousand footcandles.

 

WATER:

 

Normal. Water thoroughly, let soil dry to touch to a soil depth of 1/2".

FERTILIZER:

 

Every 2 weeks in spring and summer

 

SOIL MIX:

 

1 to 2 parts sphagnum peat moss, 1 part vermiculite, 1 part sterilized loam, and 1 part clean coarse sand or Perlite.

 

PROPOGATION:

 

Stem or leaf cuttings.

 

SELECTION GUIDE:

 

Select sturdy, shapely plant with healthy foliage and bright, clear colored flowers. New flower buds desirable. Check leaf axils for insects. Avoid plants with disease or insect damage.

 

CARE:

 

Moderate. Lives well under average home conditions. Attractive with moderate maintenance.

 

OTHER CULTIVARS:

 

Many cultivars exist.

 

PROBLEMS:

 Powdery mildew: Remove infected leaves, spray (fungicide), provide more light.
Leaf miners: Remove and destroy infested leaves.
Thrips: Wash, pick off and destroy damaged buds. Use insecticide.
