Phlox Print E-mail
phloxPhlox in bloom are excellent. Their plants are blanketed with masses of small, star-shaped, colorful flowers. There are several types, the most common of which are spring-blooming creeping phlox and summer-blooming tall phlox. Phlox is one of the longest lasting cut flowers you can grow. The compact plants are ideal for the front of the flower border or for containers.

You can find a type of phlox appropriate for almost any garden position. Spring-blooming creeping phlox are suitable for a ground cover in rock gardens and in woodland plantings. Tall garden phlox with their exuberant early summer flowers you can use for enlivening of the back of the border.
Select a place with humid, well-drained soil. Some types like full sun and other types prosper in shade.

Set phloxes in spring, spacing plants 30 to 60 centimeters apart, depending on the variety. Prepare the garden bed with a garden fork to loosen the soil to a depth of 30 to 40 centimeters, and then mix in a 5- to 10-centimeters stratum of compost. A hole for phlox must be twice the diameter of the pot the plant is in. Carefully remove the plant from its container and place it in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Carefully fill in around the root ball and firm the soil gently. Water thoroughly.

Tall phlox are susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in regions with hot, humid summers, so choose resistant varieties.
Each spring you should apply a thin layer of compost. To retain moisture and control weeds by a 5-centimeters layer of mulch. To hearten rebloom, cut back old flower stems. To encourage vigor and minimize disease problems, divide tall garden phlox every 2 to 3 years.
